Parent Support Group

Tao Nan School Parent Support Group (TNS PSG) was founded in 2002 with a handful of parents. Today, the TNS PSG committee members are parents from diverse background but all sharing a common goal - to help the school in its mission to nurture our children.

Mission

Our mission is to support the school's efforts in creating a conducive learning environment for our children and foster a closer relationship between the teachers, parents and pupils.

How to join the TNS PSG?

As we believe that it is very important for all parents to be involved in the education of their children through active participation and support of school activities and programs, we consider all parents in TNS to be automatically part of our school’s parent support group.  The PSG committee is formed to work closely with the school to identify and organise various activities and events throughout the year.

Areas Parents can be involved in

Dear Parents,

Tao Nan School Parent Support Group (TNS PSG) was founded in 2002 with a handful of parents. Today, the TNS PSG committee members are parents from diverse background but all sharing a common goal - to help the school in its mission to nurture our children to their fullest potential.

How to join the TNS PSG?
We believe that it is beneficial and important for all parents to be involved in the education of their children through active participation and support of the class and school’s activities and programs. We therefore consider all parents in TNS part of our school’s parent support group. The PSG committee is formed to work closely with the school to identify and organise various activities and events throughout the year. The PSG committee will work with the appointed Parent Class Representatives (PCRs) to disseminate information and activate the parents to come alongside to help when there is a need.

How You Can Help...
You can volunteer your time and talents by:
(a) taking part in one or more of the daily duties
(b) assisting in the various school events.

(A) Daily Duties

(1) Learning Support Program

The LSP is to provide support to primary 1 & 2 pupils who require extra help in English language. Pupils are identified for LSP by their class teachers. Each parent volunteer comes in once a week each time to give close attention and guidance to one or two students to cover the following areas:

  • To listen to the child’s reading the stories and correct or teach the child how to pronounce words in the stories.
  • Engage child in discussion about the story.
  • To explain the meaning of the words or paragraphs
The LSP sessions are held every  Monday (12.15-12.45pm), Tuesday (12nn-12.30pm) and Thursday (12nn-12.30pm).  Six volunteers are needed each day.  Each volunteer is expected to help only once a week.

(2) Library Duty

The volunteers will help students with the borrowing and returning of books.

At times, the volunteers may need to remind the students to be silent in the reading areas for the benefit of all library users and also to assist the school librarian with wrapping and repairing of books.

Library Duty is from Monday to Friday (12nn-1pm). Three volunteers are needed each day.  Each volunteer needs to help only once a week.

(3) Before School Care

This duty involves looking after the Primary One students during their Silent Reading time when they come to school in the afternoon. The B4 School Care duty helps to ensure that children who arrive in school earlier then the teachers’ official working hours are cared for until the teachers arrive, and also to allow the teachers more time to prepare for their day’s work. The venue is the Primary One students assemble area at either Foyer C or Canteen depending on the day of the week.

B4 School Care is from Monday to Friday (12nn-1pm) except Wednesday (12.15-1.30pm).  Two volunteers are needed each day. Each volunteer needs to help only once a week.

(4) Recess Duty

We need two volunteers for each day for this duty. The job is to keep a watchful eye on the lower primary students (P1 n P2).  The volunteers will need to

  • Remind the children not to run in the canteen
  • Offer help to children to open their food wrapper etc
  • Reassure the children who had forgotten to bring their wallet and let them know that they can still get food from the stall vendors but REMIND them to pay back to the vendor the next day.
  • Inform the cleaner immediately if there is spillage of food/soup on the floor, and to block out the spillage area to prevent students from slipping and falling and hence hurting themselves
Recess duty is from Monday to Friday (3-4pm).  Two volunteers are needed each day.   Each volunteer needs to help only once a week.

(5) After School Care

This program started two years ago and was well received by both parents and teachers. This duty is to look after a few selected Primary Five and Six students (as identified by their form teachers).  The scope of duty is:-

  • Take the students’ attendance
  • Make sure they finish their homework given by their teachers
  • Help the students with their school work if you know but this is not a prerequisite
After School Care is on Monday and Friday (1.30-3.30pm). Four volunteers are needed on both days.  Each volunteer needs to help only once a week.

(B) Supporting Events

PSG supports the school in the various events throughout the year:

  • Father@School Activities
  • International Friendship Day
  • Mid Autumn Festival
  • NAPFA Test
  • Racial Harmony Day
  • Swimming Carnival
  • Sports Day
Besides the daily duties, these supporting events require many parent volunteers to help in organizing as well as the running of the program on the day itself. Parents are usually informed by the PSG committee via the parents’ network through the Parent Class Representatives (PCRs) who are chosen at the beginning of the year during the level briefing sessions.

The support of all parents is important in ensuring that our children are engaged and developed to their fullest potential. We encourage all parents, especially fathers, to be actively involved in the school activities.

Our mission is to support the school's efforts in creating a conducive learning environment for our children and foster a closer relationship between the teachers, parents and pupils. Feel free to email the PSG committee at psg@tns.sg if you have any clarification or suggestion!

Thank you for your support and we look forward to working closely with you in the year ahead!

Best Regards,

Patrick Pang

PSG Chairman 2010/11
